I came across a site showing fan made Star Wars helmets and thought it would be a cool idea to create a CG X-Wing helmet as a new private project. It took a while to figure out how to create the final shape of the helmet but after two attempts everything turned out all right. I set up the UV-mapping in Cinema 4D and started to create a few test renderings with VRay. Because I just wanted to create not only a boring studio scene for the helmet, I modelled a simple X-Wing fighter as a background scene. Because most of the background is blurred by DOF the fighter did not had to be super accurate.
When it comes to lighting I ended up with two setups. This one is the night setup I created with a few VRay area lights and a HDRI as a reflective environment. Of course you can also watch the daylight setup of the scene.
